The jury of this year’s festival is composed of experienced professionals from the field of animation. An Award Ceremony for the best films in their respective categories will be held on Sunday May 23 at 2 PM (Finnish time, UTC +03.00) The event will be available for free on Eventive and Facebook, on the Animatricks page.
The judge for the National competition is acclaimed Estonian director Ülo Pikkov. He began his studies in the Academy of Arts in Turku, Finland in the 90s. Since then he has gained merit in animation and directed several award-winning short animations, like Tik-Tak (2014) and Dialogos (2013). Pikkov teaches animation in the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn and defended his doctorate in 2018 with his work Anti-Animation, the Peculiarities of Eastern European Animated Film. Pikkov will award the Best National (Finnish) Short Film. The umbrella organization of animation, Animaatiokilta, will also present a stipend of 400 euros to the winner.
The jury for the International Competition consist of the director of Mother and Milk, Ami Lindholm, also known for their newest comic book Sankariperhe. With her are Janne Korsumäki, former creative director of Animatricks and journalist, critic and animation historian Heikki Jokinen. The awards given out by this trio will be Best International Short Film, Best Student Film, Best Documentary Animation and Best Experimental Animation.
The Junior Competition will be judged by artist Anne Savitie. A graduate of Animation in Turku Academy of Arts, Savitie teaches animation for different groups all the way from five-year-olds to seniors. For her, the wonder of animation comes from magic, storytelling and the many ways one can let their imagination fly. The award in the Junior Competition will be for Best Children’s Animation.
